Incident Narrative
LOST HILLS, Calif., Wednesday afternoon, Kern County firefighters responded to reports of two small roadside fires, burning in dry grass near the intersection of Hwy 46 and Hwy 33. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed there were two fires approximately one mile apart. The fires had already grown from the reports of small fires into dozens of acres. Firefighters split up and began working to contain both fires simultaneously. Ground resources used a tactic known as "Mobile Attack". This tactic requires one firefighter to walk along the side of the moving fire apparatus with the fire hose. This teamwork allows them to move quickly along the fires edge extinguishing the fire as they go. While mobile attack operations are very effective, the support from air resources was necessary. Planes and helicopters dropped water and retardant on the flanks and head of the fire, slowing it down and reducing the intensity of the fire. Through the combined efforts of all on scene the fire's forward spread was stopped within hours. The fire was contained at 1,310 acres. No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.
