Incident Narrative
LOST HILLS, Calif., On June 21st, 2024, at 12:09 p.m. Kern County firefighters were dispatched to a reported grass fire on the south side of Hwy 46, several miles west of Hwy 33. Smoke was visible from the live feed of an ALERTCalifornia wildfire camera. Firefighters arrived to find a grass fire, approximately 10 acres in size, spreading quickly. One structure was threatened and was quickly made a priority for protection. The fire burned at the base of the temblor mountain range and began to run as it found the slopes. Thanks to a rapid division of resources to the fire’s flanks combined with numerous water and fire retardant drops from the air, the fire’s spread was halted. Dozers arrived and quickly contained all sections of open fire line. The fire was mapped at 543 acres. Crews achieved complete extinguishment and containment of the fire in just over 5 hours time.Â
No injuries were reported. The cause was investigated and found to be accidental. A person was working with an auger and rested the power tool on the ground. The hot muffler came in contact with dry grass and ignited the fire.Â
Please be aware that power equipment can cause sparks. Please ensure that no vehicle parts drag on the ground, including chains while towing. Being alert to actions that cause sparks can prevent a wildfire.Â
