Incident Narrative
On Saturday, July 26, at approximately 6:27 p.m., Kern County Firefighters were dispatched to a first-alarm wildland fire in the area south of Hwy 46 and west of Hwy 33. As personnel from Station 26 (Lost Hills) were leaving their station, they noticed a column of smoke. Cal Fire Air Attack 340 and two retardant-dropping tankers from Paso Robles arrived on scene first and observed approximately 15 acres of grass burning, surrounded by roads with no exposures threatened. Crews from Lost Hills, McKittrick, Buttonwillow, and Wasco all arrived on scene and immediately began to work to outflank the fire. Firefighters assigned to E324 and P31 were able to backfire off a road to help contain an open flank of the fire. Kern County Fire Department’s Helicopter 409 made multiple drops on the south side of the fire to assist units on the ground in stopping the forward progression. Crews remained on scene for approximately three hours, mopping up and extinguishing every last hotspot. A total of 77 acres were burned.
