Incident Narrative
CALIENTE, Calif. | At approximately 2:39 PM on September 9, 2024, the Kern County Fire Department responded to a vegetation fire named the “Train Fire,” located in steep terrain. Initial reports to the Kern County Emergency Communications Center described a single fire; however, upon arrival, firefighters discovered two separate fires actively threatening nearby homes and infrastructure. Due to the dry and hot conditions in the area, fire spread rapidly.
Aerial resources played a crucial role in combating the fire. Kern County Fire Department’s helicopter, H408, provided critical reconnaissance from the air, guiding ground crews on the best access routes to reach the fire. Large air tankers made strategic drops of fire retardant to slow the fire’s advance, while helicopters executed precise water drops in areas that were otherwise inaccessible.
On the ground, firefighters faced additional challenges, including steep slopes that made direct attack difficult in many areas. Crews utilized mobile attack tactics wherever possible, deploying charged hose lines while maneuvering fire engines along the fire’s edge to extinguish the flames. This aggressive firefighting strategy was essential to gaining the upper hand.
Train tracks running through the middle of the incident required temporary shutdown for several hours to allow firefighters to work safely in the area without interference from passing trains.
No evacuation warnings or orders were issued, and crews are continuing to make good progress in containing the fire, mapped at 48 acres. We remind residents that the ongoing hot and dry conditions are ideal for fires to ignite and grow quickly. Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious or dangerous fire activity immediately.
