Incident Narrative
BODFISH, Calif. | On Saturday afternoon, Kern County Fire Department (KCFD) personnel were alerted to a vegetation fire burning close to their station in Lake Isabella. As crews responded, a full wildfire response was dispatched.
KCFD Engine 72 was first on scene and encountered flames moving quickly through dense brush toward multiple residences. The crew split up to protect homes on separate fronts, initiating firefighting efforts as reinforcements arrived from KCFD, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS).
While USFS hand crews and KCFD engine companies battled the fire’s most active areas, the Incident Commander conducted a strategic reconnaissance of an unseen area of the fire. This critical decision led to the discovery of a spot fire north of Bodfish Canyon Road. Firefighters acted swiftly, containing the spot fire before it could escalate into a larger threat.
With the spot fire extinguished, all available resources refocused on the main fire. Aerial support from USFS and KCFD helicopters bolstered ground crews, enabling them to hold containment lines and successfully defend homes in the area.
Saturday’s rapid, coordinated response highlights the effectiveness of interagency cooperation and the importance of defensible space created by residents. Thanks to these combined efforts, the wildfire was contained at approximately 6 acres, with no homes lost.
