Christmas Tree Fire Safety Demonstration

KERN COUNTY, Calif | To raise community awareness about the increased risk of structure fires during the holiday season, the Kern County Fire Department and the Bakersfield Fire Department are partnering to conduct a Christmas Tree Fire Safety Demonstration. This annual event provides local media with a firsthand look at how quickly a dry Christmas tree can ignite and spread fire inside a home.

Each year, Christmas tree related fires result in significant property loss, injuries, and, in some cases, fatalities. National fire statistics show that electrical malfunctions, such as shorts in holiday lights, along with open flames from candles, matches, and lighters, are among the most common ignition sources. These fires can grow rapidly, making early prevention critical for every household.

During the demonstration, firefighters will showcase how quickly a dry and neglected Christmas tree can ignite. The live burn will help emphasize why consistent tree care and safe decorating practices are essential for preventing holiday tragedies.

The Kern County Fire Department and the Bakersfield Fire Department encourage all community members to practice the following safety precautions throughout the season:

  • Water your Christmas tree daily. Dry trees can ignite in seconds and burn with extreme intensity.
  • Use battery-operated flameless candles instead of traditional open-flame candles. Modern flameless candles closely mimic the appearance of real candles without the fire hazard.
  • Keep trees a minimum of 3 feet away from all heat sources, including fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles, and heating vents.
  • Always unplug decorative lighting before leaving home or going to bed.

Members of the media are strongly encouraged to attend, capture footage, and help share critical seasonal fire-safety information with the public.
