Incident Narrative
KERNVILLE, Calif. | On Sunday, December 22, at approximately 9:30 a.m., residents of Kernville reported a rapidly expanding smoke column in a local residential neighborhood. Multiple calls were placed to the Kern County Emergency Communication Center, alerting the Kern County Fire Department. The thick plume of smoke was visible from afar, with additional calls coming in from across the Lake Isabella area.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a home roughly 50% engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading to nearby grass. As crews worked to contain the blaze, propane tanks on the property began to explode, creating additional hazards for both residents and first responders. Despite the dangers, firefighters continued their efforts to control the fire and prevent further damage.
Thanks to the coordinated response from firefighters in the lake area, as well as additional support from Glennville and Inyokern stations, the structure fire was knocked down and the grass fire contained before it could threaten surrounding homes.
In addition to the on-duty firefighters, an off-duty Kern County firefighter also responded to the scene, offering support wherever needed. One of the greatest attributes of Kern County firefighters is that they do not see helping others as merely a duty when wearing their uniforms. They are members of the community, living alongside their neighbors, and are always ready to lend a hand to ensure the safety and well-being of the people they serve.
The cause of the fire is undetermined. No injuries were reported, but three adults, two dogs, and six puppies were displaced.
SAFETY NOTE:
Thankfully, all residents of the home had safely evacuated. Alerted to the dangerous fire by their dog. This fire provides the important reminder that every second counts when evacuating a burning home. All are encouraged to install smoke alarms in the home and test them regularly.
