Incident Narrative
LOST HILLS, Calif. On Thursday, June 6th at approximately 3:40pm, The Kern County Fire Department Responded to reports of a grass fire in the area of Twissleman Road and I-5. KCFD Patrol 26 arrived on scene and reported active fire with a moderate rate of spread that had burned approximately thirty (30) acres of grass and brush. Active flame spanned both sides of Lost Hills Road making it difficult to contain.Â
Winds pushed the fire to the southeast, burning power poles and threatening the Kern Wildland Refuge Area. First units on scene took immediate action on the fire and requested additional 4x4 wildland fire vehicles, dozers, and hand crews due to the rapid growth of the incident. Downed power lines necessitated Law Enforcement to place a road closure on Lost Hills Road between I-5 and Twissleman Road.
Aggressive action was taken by utilizing KCFD dozers and hand crews to remove vegetation and create a barrier between the fire and unburned grass and brush, while KCFD wildland vehicles took direct attack to head off the fire. Due to this coordinated effort, forward progression of the fire was stopped within ninety (90) minutes of the initial report and prior to affecting the Kern Wildland Refuge Area. To ensure the wind did not continue to spread embers and ignite unburned areas, personnel on scene performed extensive mop up to extinguish any potential threat. Approximately 3,200 total acres were burned. Power poles were the only damaged property.
No injuries were reported, the cause of the fire is unknown
