Incident Narrative
INYOKERN, Calif., On March 29th, 2024, at 3:16 a.m. Kern County firefighters were dispatched to a reported house on fire with possible victims trapped inside on the 1500 block of N. Calvert Blvd. An ambulance was started as a precaution. First arriving firefighters found a single story modular home, approximately 1400 square feet in size, with 75% of the structure involved in flames. There was heavy fire showing from all of the windows as the firefighters went to work. The Captain was unable to make his way completely around the home due to the large level of fire activity but did manage to turn off the electrical and gas utilities. Hoselines were pulled to the front and rear of the structure as firefighters aggressively attacked the fire. The 2nd arriving engine “grabbed” a hydrant, and helped establish a water supply for the firefight. With priorities of victim search and fire extinguishment, firefighters pushed into the structure. Progress was slow as the firefighters fought through the heat and flames. Additional hoselines were pulled and a neighboring structure was protected. 12 firefighters consumed 35 bottles of air as they labored in the early morning hours.
We are saddened to report that while conducting the search, 2 victims were found, deceased. Our hearts go out to their families and loved ones. The Kern County Sheriff Coroner’s Office and Kern County Fire Investigation Unit were requested to the incident. Special care was taken to leave the area untouched where the occupants were discovered. The area where the fire possibly started was also preserved as much as was possible as firefighters ensured full extinguishment of the fire.
All inquiries regarding the deceased will be handled by the Kern County Sheriff Coroner’s Office.
No further injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The scene was left in the care of the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.
