KERN COUNTY, Calif. | As part of National Preparedness Month this September, the Kern County Fire Department is reminding all drivers of the critical importance of being prepared before hitting the highway. Whether you’re planning a long road trip or simply commuting to work, taking the time to prepare can make all the difference in ensuring a safe journey.
Top Tips for Preparing Before You Hit the Highway:
1. Check Your Vehicle
– Ensure your tires are properly inflated and have enough tread for long trips.
– Test all lights and signals, including headlights, brake lights, and turn signals.
– Top off all essential fluids (oil, coolant, windshield wiper fluid).
– Ensure your brakes are in good working order.
2. Pack an Emergency Kit
– Carry a basic emergency kit, including jumper cables, a flashlight, bottled water, a first aid kit, and non-perishable snacks.
– Don’t forget a spare tire, jack, and tire iron.
– Include any medications or special items needed for family members.
3. Plan Your Route
– Plan your route in advance, checking for any road closures, construction, or weather alerts.
– Always have a physical map or an offline GPS app in case you lose signal in remote areas.
4. Stay Alert and Focused
– Rest before you drive. A well-rested driver is a safer driver.
– Keep distractions, such as cell phones, to a minimum and use hands-free devices for necessary calls.
– Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
5. Know the Signs of Trouble
– If your car begins to overheat, pull over immediately to let it cool down.
– Watch for warning signs from your vehicle, such as odd noises, vibrations, or dashboard alerts.
The Kern County Fire Department responds to numerous vehicle accidents every year, many of which could have been avoided with proper preparation. We urge drivers to take these simple steps before they head out, as they can reduce the risk of accidents and potentially save lives.
At the beginning of 2024, the KCFD purchased new Hurst “Jaws of Life” for our Kern River Valley stations, thanks to a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety. On March 18th, these tools were put into use for the first time during an incident. Firefighters worked to free a victim of a vehicle rollover so that they could be transported to a trauma center for treatment. The images in this press release show Kern County firefighters using these tools and demonstrate the need to provide our personnel with the most efficient and reliable equipment, so they can serve the public when seconds are crucial in saving a life.
Ensuring your safety on the road begins with preparation. By following these tips, you can help protect yourself and others while traveling. Let’s all commit to being responsible drivers this September and beyond. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone.
