Wasco, CA

At 8:52 p.m. this evening, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a structure fire located at the 1700 block of 2nd Street in Wasco, CA. The caller relayed that a family with four children were inside the residence when the fire started. More reports came in prior to crews arriving saying that the father was still inside trying to extinguish the fire. Upon arrival, fire crews found a single story residence with light smoke showing from the front door. With a resident still inside, crews made a rapid entry bringing the father to safety and locating fire in the children’s bedroom. Additional crews arrived on scene from the neighboring communities of Shafter and McFarland to assist with extinguishing the fire and confirming no more occupants were in the house. As a result of regular drilling and continuing training, the fire was brought under control in less than 15 minutes. It should be noted the fire was also contained to the room of origin with no extension into the attic. No other occupants were found after a thorough secondary search. The cause of the fire was reported to be a juvenile playing with a lighter. An infant was treated for minor smoke irritation and was transported to the hospital as a precaution.
