At approximately 9:00 p.m. the Kern County Fire Department received multiple calls for a structure fire and explosion at the Kern Refinery on the 7700 block of East Panama Lane in Lamont.  The first arriving unit encountered a fire coming from the top and bottom of a cooling tower at the refinery. Fire personnel and refinery employees were able to isolate the fire to the tower and stabilize the incident. Due to air quality concerns, air monitors were deployed and Environmental Health were dispatched. Crews will remain on scene for several hours to monitor the fire.  Panama Lane, east of Weedpatch Highway was closed for several hours, but is open now. No refinery or fire personnel were injured. The cause is under investigation. Cost of property damaged was unknown.
