East Bakersfield, CA

Just before 1:30 a.m., the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a structure fire in the 2200 block of Monterey Street. Responding units from Station 41 (Virginia & Mt. Vernon) reported a large amount of smoke and flames visible from their station and ordered a 2nd Alarm response. First arriving crews encountered a fully involved single-story apartment unit, approximately 1800 square feet in size. Crews attacked the fire from the exterior and established a water supply, extinguishing the fire in 35 minutes. The structure sustained major damage and is a total loss. Crews from East Bakersfield responded to the same unit two months ago for a fire. The structure has been abandoned since that time and is reported to have had squatters living in it. The squatters are believed to have started this fire although there are no signs of malicious arson. Two nearby units also sustained damage and one family has been displaced while PG&E restores power to their unit. The displaced family is being assisted by the Red Cross.

Assisting Agencies: Bakersfield Fire Department, KCSO, PG&E, Red Cross
