Structure Fire - 900 Block of 6th Street, Wasco

Shortly after 11:45 PM, Friday night, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a structure fire in the 900 block of 6th St. First arriving crews encountered a four-unit apartment complex with smoke emanating from one of the center apartments. Due to the potential hazard to the residents, a reinforced structure response was initiated. The sleeping residents had been alerted by their smoke alarm and had exited the structure. Fire crews deployed a hose line to extinguish the fire and to protect the adjacent units. Upon entry, the team discovered a fire in the kitchen with smoke and flames approaching the living room as well as smoke filling the attic. The fire was controlled in approximately 20 minutes with no damage to the neighboring apartments. Loss to the structure and contents was estimated to be $60,000. Crews saved the rest of the complex valued at $250,000. Two adults were displaced by the blaze and the Red Cross was notified and assisted them to find accommodations. The cause of the fire is under investigation
