At 12:53 a.m. firefighters from multiple agencies were dispatched to reports of a vegetation fire in the Kern Canyon. Firefighters arrived to find a fire approximately 40 acres in size spreading up the canyon walls. Initial efforts were to safely access the area to identify immediate threats from the fire and hazards to firefighters. Stopping the fire’s forward progress has been especially challenging due to the steep unstable terrain. As day broke additional firefighters and air support arrived and the coordinated efforts slowed the fire’s forward progress. Firefighters will continue to work through the day to completely stop the fire and reach full containment. There were no injuries reported to citizens or firefighters during today’s operations. To provide for the safety of the public and efficiency of operations, State Route 178 was closed in both directions and remains closed until further notice.
