Incident Narrative
TEJON RANCH, Calif., Early Monday morning, reports were received of a grass fire burning near the Grapevine. The fire was burning in dry grass about waist high and spreading quickly as firefighters arrived. Contributing to the fast fire spread was wind aligned with the slope of the mountain. The Incident Commander recognized help would be needed to achieve containment so additional resources were ordered, including more aircraft. As reinforcements were arriving another fire was spotted further up the mountain and the aircraft flying overhead could see a person near it. Kern County Fire Department Arson Investigators, who had responded to the incident, made contact with the individual who was arrested in connection with the fire.
The forward rate of spread of the fires was stopped within hours of dispatch time. The fire was held to approximately 121 acres with 60% containment as of Monday at 4:00 p.m.
