Incident Narrative
BAKERSFIELD, Calif., On August 27th, 2024, at 2:18 p.m. Kern County firefighters were dispatched to reports of a vegetation fire on Granite Road just north of Round Mountain Road. As firefighters arrived, they could see a grass fire approximately five acres in size. As the firefighters determined the best route of access through gates and fences, a growing wind encouraged the fire and it began to spread at a moderate to rapid pace. An objective was given to keep the fire from jumping over Granite Road. Crews held the roadway, quickly catching a spot fire as it ignited across the pavement. With support from the air, ground crews strategically held dirt roads and retardant lines to cut off the forward spread of the fire. With the fire halted, firefighters worked to extinguish hot areas within the fire’s perimeter. It was a short but intense firefight. The quick stop prevented the fire from growing to threaten nearby homes, ranch lands and oilfields.Â
The fire was mapped at 77 acres and is 100% contained. The cause is under investigation. No injuries were reported.Â
