At 1:23 pm, Kern County Fire units out of the Taft and surrounding communities responded to a report of a Garage fire. While enroute, units reported a large amount of smoke, eliciting the response of additional equipment. First arriving units encountered a working attached garage fire, a vehicle burning in the garage and fire extending in to the main home. Fire crews made an aggressive fire attack and stopped fire progress. There was extensive smoke damage through the rest of the home. The five occupants of the home escaped without injury. One cat perished as a result of the fire. Smoke detectors did activate and alert the occupants.
