Incident Narrative
BODFISH, Calif., At approximately 10:25 a.m. on May 3, Kern County firefighters were dispatched to a reported structure fire on the 200 block of Salaine Drive. Engine 72 arrived on scene to find smoke showing from the attic vents of a double-wide mobile home. Multiple vehicles were parked in the driveway, and neighbors informed firefighters that a resident might be inside.
Firefighters went into “rescue mode,” pulling a hoseline and making a rapid entry into the smoke-filled home. Despite limited visibility, they simultaneously fought the fire and conducted a thorough primary search, checking under furniture, in closets, and across the full footprint of the residence.
Fortunately, no people were found inside. However, firefighters discovered two small dogs sheltering under a bed. The animals were quickly removed from the structure and brought outside to safety and much needed fresh air.
While the dogs were reunited with their family and appear to have recovered from the ordeal, the fire caused significant damage. Crews remained on scene for several hours conducting extensive overhaul operations to ensure all hot spots were extinguished.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
