Incident Narrative

BAKERSFIELD, Calif., Tuesday afternoon, Kern County firefighters responded to a vegetation fire along Hwy 99. The fire, which was caused by workers grinding metal on a nearby fence, prompted multiple calls to the Emergency Communications Center due to its proximity to the heavily travelled highway. Firefighters used offroad vehicles to quickly extinguish certain areas of the fire and in other areas allowed the fire to burn up to surrounding roads. The combination of strategies extinguished the fire quickly while leaving little dry vegetation unburned, thus limiting the potential of future fires. The total area burned amounted to 22.6 acres. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters reported on scene.
