Incident Narrative
BAKERSFIELD, Calif., Wednesday morning just after 5 a.m. Kern County firefighters were dispatched to the Kern Canyon for a vehicle over the side, approximately 50 feet below the roadway. KCFD Engine 42 arrived on scene to find a passenger vehicle with a single occupant out of the vehicle sitting with bystanders on the rocks below the roadway with minor medical complaints. The Captain from Engine 42 was able to hike down to the patient while the rest of the crew from Engine 42 set up a rope rescue system to lower the firefighter and equipment down to the patient. The crew worked together to assist the patient and bystanders back up to the road safely. Once there, Hall Ambulance personnel assumed patient care. There were no injuries to Fire Service personnel. This was the second vehicle over a hillside that the Kern County Fire Department and Bakersfield Fire Department had responded to within 2.5 hours.Â
