Incident Narrative
RIDGECREST, Calif., On July 3, 2025, the Kern County Fire Department was dispatched to a reported hiker who had become incapacitated approximately half a mile from any accessible road. KCFD Engine 81’s crew made their way to the patient up steep, rocky terrain. After evaluation, it was determined that the patient would need to be airlifted via hoist to a safe location. Helicopter 409 was launched, and Liberty Ambulance paramedics performed a detailed assessment of the patient while awaiting its arrival.
It was dusk when H-409 arrived on scene, facing an additional challenge of 35 mph winds. Engine 84 prepared a landing zone for the airship, and the victim was extricated just as night fell. H-409 landed under dark conditions using night vision goggles. With the assistance of Engine 84’s crew and Liberty Ambulance, the patient was transferred via ground transport to definitive care.
