Incident Narrative

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. Last night, Kern County firefighters efficiently and skillfully used a precise burn strategy to contain a wildfire. On Rancheria Road, two miles north of Hwy 178, firefighters battled the “Ranch Fire”. The fire started around 7:29 p.m. and began to run through the foothills. It was a busy day for the KCFD, with firefighters spread throughout the county on multiple large incidents. At the time of the Ranch Fire, firefighters had just gained control of a vegetation fire threatening neighborhoods in Lake Isabella. Deputy Chiefs and Division Chiefs tactfully relocated firefighters and equipment to assist on the new start.

Initially, firefighters were challenged by winds out of the northwest, spreading the fire quickly through dry grass. As the night set in and more firefighters arrived, the winds died down and presented conditions for a unique opportunity: Using fire to fight fire. A plan was designed to send fire from surrounding roads towards the main fire to consume all vegetation in between. One of Kern County Fire’s most experienced leaders assumed the role of Burn Boss and directed the operation. Working as a team, crews put on quite a show, using controlled fire to extinguish wildfire. Within several hours, the work was done. The blackened area grew from 300 to 600 acres but was contained swiftly and safely on firefighter’s terms. The potential for an extensive fire, thousands of acres in size, was denied. The majority of fire equipment on scene was promptly released and made available to respond to the next emergency.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
