Incident Narrative
FELLOWS, Calif., Tuesday afternoon firefighters worked to contain a vegetation fire which was heavily influenced by wind and terrain. In one moment, the fire was backing down hills with manageable flame lengths, the next it was pushing hard upslope and jumping roads. In addition to contending with strong erratic winds, the terrain posed another obstacle. Some areas simply could not be accessed with equipment. The work of hand crews shined in this moment. Carefully they traversed the slopes, trying not to send rocks tumbling down, and attacked the fires edge with only their hand tools. The combination of air resources, heavy equipment, engine companies, and hand crews, overwhelmed the fire. The Mocal fire was held to 116 acres. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
