Incident Narrative

BAKERSFIELD, Calif., Thursday afternoon, your Kern County firefighters responded to reports of smoke seen from the roof of a residential structure. A standard “Structure Fire” response was dispatched.

A KCFD Safety Officer arrived first on scene. Safety 3 provided a size-up of on scene conditions and took command. Smoke was flowing steadily from the eves and roof vents. It was an active attic fire so the response was upgraded. The “Reinforced Structure Fire” response increased the number of firefighters and apparatus responding.

With the Incident Commander role filled the first arriving fire engine was able to keep their crew together and systematically begin the task of identifying the fire’s location within the attic. Thermal Imaging Cameras were used to pinpoint the area of the ceiling that needed to be opened. To minimize damage to belongings while fighting the fire, firefighters moved home furnishings and placed salvage covers when possible.

Once access to the fire’s location was made a conservative amount of water was used to extinguish the fire inside the attic, keeping it from extending into the living areas of the home.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical fault. There were no injuries reported. Firefighters remained on scene for a time after extinguishing the fire to cleanup areas where the ceiling was removed.
