Incident Narrative

TAFT, Calif., On April 12th, 2024, at 11:48 a.m. Kern County firefighters were dispatched to a report of smoke in the Honolulu Hills. The first arriving firefighters found approximately 2-3 acres of grass and light brush on fire, being driven by strong winds through oil fields. The area contained hills and numerous dirt roads. Additional fire crews were requested to respond due to the windy conditions, bringing fire engines and 4x4 patrols. The flames leapt across the fields, jumping roads and behaving unpredictably as the air blasted. Helicopter 407 launched and made its way from Keene.

Though Kern County had no lack of rain this winter and it is still early in the year, fire conditions around us can rapidly change. A short warming trend combined with wind can change the flammability of grass and light vegetation in a short period of time. This was displayed today as firefighters pursued the running fire.

The firefighters showed their adaptability as they adjusted their tactics and strategy with the erratic flames. Water drops from the helicopter and mobile attack with the patrols slowed the fire’s progress. Firefighters also tactfully used fire to “fire out” a section of vegetation. This technique lowered the intensity of the main fire as it burned toward them and reduced the risk to oil field equipment in the area.

Forward progress was stopped and the fire was held to a total of 254 acres.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Thankfully no houses or other structures were in the area. With the season changing, it is a good reminder to cut and clear dead vegetation away from our homes and fences.
