Incident Narrative
Thursday, Kern County firefighters responded to a vehicle accident involving two semi trucks, east of Broome Rd in the eastbound lanes of Hwy 58. One semi truck loaded with wine was parked on the shoulder when it was struck by a semi truck loaded with broccoli. The collision resulted in a large vehicle fire and subsequent grass fire on the hillside nearby.
Firefighters provided medical care to the driver of one of the semi trucks, who sustained moderate injuries and was transported via ground ambulance to a local hospital.
Firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire and also worked to stop the forward progress of the grass fire. Total acres burned amounted to 3.4.
Multiple agencies worked on scene while east bound traffic was closed. Around 3:45 pm the scene was stabilized sufficiently to allow for traffic in one lane to be reopened safely.
