Incident Narrative
RIDGECREST, Calif., On March 21, 2026, at approximately 1:55 p.m., Kern County Fire Department was dispatched to a reported tree fire in the 1300 block of N. Downs Street. While en route, the captain of Engine 84 upgraded the incident to a structure fire due to visible heavy smoke and high winds in the area.
Upon arrival, crews found significant fire involvement in a primary structure, with multiple downed power lines creating additional hazards. Fire had also extended into a nearby structure. The incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm structure fire, and firefighters deployed multiple hose lines to attack the fire and conduct searches to ensure no occupants were inside.
Through quick, coordinated efforts, firefighters were able to stop the forward progression of the fire within approximately 30 minutes of the initial dispatch. Despite challenging conditions, including strong winds and downed power lines, crews successfully limited the damage to two residences and two outbuilding.
Once the fire was knocked down, the power company secured and de-energized the downed lines. Fire personnel remained on scene for several hours conducting overhaul and mop-up operations to ensure complete extinguishment. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
