Incident Narrative

ARVIN, Calif., Thursday, at approximately 2:20 pm, Kern County firefighters were dispatched to reports of a fire in a commercial building. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered large amounts of smoke coming from one side of the 7,500 square foot, single-story commercial building. The building, which was previously used for potato packaging was currently not in use. Due to the combination of fire behavior, building size, and construction type, a second alarm was requested. Firefighters first on scene began investigating access points into the building to locate the fire’s origin and established a water supply. Arvin Police officers arriving on scene assisted with stretching hose lines and blocking roadways to create a safe area for firefighters to operate within. As additional firefighters arrived an aggressive strategy was implemented to conduct interior searches for possible victims and extinguish the fire. All searches confirmed no victims inside. Firefighters remained on scene for a couple of hours completing extensive overhaul to ensure fire burning in the building’s insulation was fully extinguished. The cause is undetermined. No injuries were reported by civilians or fire personnel on scene.
