Incident Narrative
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. On June 19th at 2:53 p.m. Kern County firefighters responded to reports of smoke in the area of Hwy 178 and Kern Canyon Rd. While responding, a growing column of smoke was visible and firefighters requested additional crews to assist. Firefighters from the Sky Incident in Buttonwillow were released to join the fight. Crews accessed the fire from Daytona Dr. making their way through rough terrain behind the neighborhood. They arrived on scene of a grass fire, approximately 10-15 acres in size. The fire burned approximately 1/2 mile from homes. A plan was quickly formed and carried out to focus efforts on the north side of the fire that advanced towards the neighborhood. Patrol 42’s crew burned off of a road, adding a buffer to hold from, nicely stopping the fire’s advance. Kern County and Bakersfield firefighters continued working the other flanks of the fire, adapting to wind shifts and ultimately extinguishing the fire. No structures were lost. The fire burned 123 acres. No injuries were reported and the cause is undetermined.
