Incident Narrative

TWIN OAKS, Calif., On October 26, 2023, at approximately 4:27 p.m. Kern County firefighters were dispatched to a report of a house on fire on Sand Canyon Rd. just north of Caliente Creek Rd. During their response, firefighters were notified that new reports stated vegetation was on fire. Due to this information, the responding Battalion Chief requested a vegetation fire response, adding extra resources to the incident.

Upon their arrival, the firefighters investigated and were faced with a vegetation fire only, approximately 5 acres in size. No structures were involved, however, 1 house was threatened and needed protection. The surrounding land was used for horses and cattle. This added to the importance of quickly containing the fire. Due to the rural location, no municipal water supply was available. A water tender was used as fire engines emptied their water tanks and needed refilling. Hose packs: Backpacks with fire hose and accessories, were utilized to stretch hundreds of feet of hose up the hill from the fire apparatus.

With the help of air tankers and helicopters, the ground firefighters quickly stopped the fire’s spread. The fire was contained with a final size of 6.1 acres. The temperature dropped as the sun set behind the hills assisting firefighters as they extinguished the last of the remaining coals.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. No injuries were reported.
