BAKERSFIELD, Calif., On May 23, 2025, at approximately 1:54 p.m., Kern County and Bakersfield firefighters responded to reports of a vegetation fire near a neighborhood at the base of the Panorama Bluffs. Strong winds fueled the fire, rapidly spreading it through dry grass and thick brush. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a blaze covering roughly three acres, driven by forceful gusts.

The fire escalated quickly, with embers carried by the wind igniting new spots. Additional resources, including fire engines, patrols, hand crews, and Helicopter 407, were deployed to combat the blaze. The fire jumped a canal and bike path at the base of the bluffs, racing uphill toward Panorama Dr. Firefighters worked tirelessly to protect lives and property, evacuating pedestrians from the bluffs and defending the nearby residences. 

In a coordinated effort, crews extended hoselines, launching a direct attack on the fire’s flanks. Portable pumps drafted water from the canal to support the operation. From above, Helicopter 407 made numerous water drops, targeting the fire’s hottest areas. After nearly two and a half hours of intense effort, firefighters halted the fire’s forward spread, leaving approximately 60 smoldering acres.

Firefighters remained on scene overnight, reinforcing containment lines and extinguishing hot spots. As of this report, on the morning of May 24th, a hand crew and two engine companies continue to work the burn area to ensure the safety of the nearby community.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
