Incident Narrative

BAKERSFIELD, Calif., Sunday, Kern County firefighters were dispatched to reports of a structure fire with an elderly homeowner and animals possibly still inside. As firefighters were responding a massive black smoke column could be seen from a great distance away. The first arriving KCFD Engine Company arrived on scene and encountered a home well involved with fire as well as vehicles, brush, and other property burning. Embers were being cast through the air and starting fires away from the main fire. A Second Alarm was requested to provide the needed equipment and firefighters to stop the fast-spreading fire. Investigations determined no one was in the home. Operations focused on extinguishing the fire, which took considerable time after knockdown due to the large amount of personal property that burned. Four residents were displaced. A California Fire Foundation SAVE card was provided to those displaced and they are receiving support from Red Cross. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported on scene. One dog perished on the fire. The cause is undetermined.
