MCFARLAND, Calif., On January 12, 2024, at 2:58 p.m. Kern County firefighters were dispatched to a report of 4 vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of Highway 43 and Pond Rd. On their arrival, they found the wreckage of a 4 vehicle accident with 2 of the vehicles showing major damage from the impact. Debris was strewn about the area and firefighters made their way to the vehicles to check for victims. 3 patients were found. Unfortunately, one was deceased. Another was found with severe injuries prompting the incident commander to request an air ambulance. As the medevac helicopter neared, a captain was assigned to find a landing zone and make contact with the helicopter’s crew. They were landed on highway 43 just north of the incident. Firefighters assisted with the loading of the patient into the helicopter. Meanwhile, crews cared for the 3rd patient, who was found pinned in their vehicle. Extensive damage to the doors had trapped the patient inside. Fire crews used Jaws of Life tools to force open a door, freeing the patient.
No injuries to firefighters occurred. The scene was left to be investigated by CHP.Â
