Incident Narrative

WOFFORD HEIGHTS, Calif. Yesterday, at approximately 4:53 p.m. Kern County firefighters were dispatched to a reported vehicle on fire on Highway 155 just north of French Gulch Marina. Reports stated the fire had spread to nearby grass and now burned on both sides of Highway 155. A full wildland response was dispatched, along with additional engines for structure protection. KCFD Engine and Patrol 76 arrived on scene to a fully involved vehicle fire that had spread into nearby grass and brush. The flames moved with afternoon winds, aiming towards multiple homes. An evacuation order was requested for the threatened areas. Kern County and Sequoia National Forest firefighters were given assignments and went to work. Firefighters rapidly deployed thousands of feet of hoselines, extending them over the uneven terrain along the fire’s edge. KCFD and Sequoia formed a unified incident command. The first air tanker drop slowed the fire as it ran west, up the hill. Swift progress was made and the threat to the nearby structures was mitigated. No structures were lost. Thousands of acres and numerous homes out in front of the fire remained untouched. All Evacuation Orders and Warnings were lifted, save for a small, precise area, which remained in Evacuation Warning status. 40 minutes after the Evac Orders were lifted and just two hours from the firefighter’s arrival, the fire’s forward spread was stopped.

Firefighters will remain on scene through Saturday, June 8th, improving containment lines and extinguishing smoldering vegetation within the fire’s perimeter.

The fire was held to 50 acres in size. Current containment is at 30%.

A firefighter from BLM suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital via ambulance. Further information can be obtained through BLM.

A vehicle fire was the cause of the wildfire. An individual was detained by CHP and KCSO near the fire scene. He was later arrested and charged by the KCFD Investigation Unit under California Penal Code 452(c).
