Shafter, CA

Just after 9:00 a.m. dispatchers at the Kern County Fire Department received a call reporting a fire in an apartment complex. Additional reports of smoke detectors going off in multiple apartments, within the complex, caused for Battalion 3 to start a second alarm to get additional fire resources started to the incident. When the first fire companies arrived on scene, they found a multi-unit apartment complex with smoke coming from the vent of one unit. Firefighters made entry into the reported location of the fire and witnessed smoke showing. Additional firefighters had to force entry into an adjoining unit and found an active fire. Firefighters made an aggressive initial attack on the fire while conducting a primary search for occupants in need of rescue. As additional firefighters arrived on scene they evacuated a total of 8 units, while other firefighters placed ladders to make access to the roof to check for fire extension into the attic. A secondary search for occupants was conducted, while firefighters were able to contain the fire to the room of origin.

The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind all residents to assure they have working smoke detectors in their homes.
