East Bakersfield,  CA

At approximately 3:30 p.m. today, the Kern County Fire Department received calls for a grass fire with structures threatened near Brundage Lane in East Bakersfield. The first arriving units encountered an approximately 1/2 acre grass fire in a vacant lot that had extended into a nearby fence and chicken coop. Crews aggressively attacked the fire and were able to bring it under control in about 30 minutes.  Portions of the fence were burned and the chicken coop was a total loss. No homes were damaged. There were no animals or people injured in the fire. The cause is under investigation.

Adults in the houses adjacent to the lot were warned of the fire by a working smoke detector in one of the houses and were able to evacuate early. Crews remained on scene to extensively mop-up.

The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind you to check your smoke detectors regularly and replace the batteries every six months.
