At approximately 11:30 Friday morning, the Kern County Fire Department received a report of a vegetation fire near the runaway truck ramp on the East side of Interstate 5, South of Grapevine Rd.  A wildland response was initiated.  First arriving crews encountered a slow-moving fire about one acre in size moving up the steep slope, burning grass and brush. A structure protection team was sent to the top on the hill to protect radio and cellular towers. Ground and air resources were ordered to attack the blaze.  Over one hundred persons were engaged in the battle from helicopters doing water drops,  air tankers applying fire retardant to hand crews with shovels and axes.  By 10 pm that evening forward progress had been stopped and all Kern equipment had been released. Mop up continues today with hand crews. Containment is currently at 70% with full containment expected by 7 pm this evening.
