Shortly before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Kern County Fire Department received a report of a residential fire in the 600 Block of Ebel Street.  A reinforced alarm was started. First arriving crews encountered a 1500 square foot single family residence approximately 50% involved, an adjacent carport 100% involved and threatened single family residences on both sides. The alarm was upgraded to a full second alarm compliment.  Firefighters determined that all residents of the house had evacuated prior to their arrival and were located safe.  An aggressive attack was made to extinguish the blaze and the flames were knocked down in approximately thirty minutes with full control in fourth five minutes. It was determined that the second alarm equipment was not needed and were cancelled. The Breathing Support unit was dispatched to the scene replaced air bottles consumed by the firefighters as well as provided much appreciated re-hydrating drinks and cooling fans to counter the high summer temperatures. Total property loss to the main structure structure and carport  and contents was estimated to be approximately $80,000. The two houses on either side received only minor damage with approximately $300,000 saved. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Additional Information:  The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind residents to install, maintain, and check their smoke detectors monthly. Change its battery twice a year, whenever we change our clocks to and from Daylight Saving Time.  Smoke detectors save lives.
