Shortly after 2:15 Wednesday afternoon, The Kern County Fire Department received a report of a large column of smoke coming from the rear of a house in the 1900 block of 18th Avenue in Delano, a reinforced structure response was initiated. First arriving crews encountered a heavily evolved, single family residence with smoke and visible flames emanating from the patio at the rear. Flames were threatening adjacent structures and had appeared to have extended into the attic of the home. After determining that the residents had escaped to safety, an aggressive attack was made to ventilate smoke and extinguish the blaze. The fire was controlled in approximately twenty minutes and crews are remaining on scene for mop up, check for extension and investigate the cause. Three adult residents were displaced and are taking shelter with family or friends. The male homeowner suffered 2nd degree burns to the soles of his feet and was transported to a Bakersfield hospital via private vehicle. Loss to the residence, an adjacent building and fence was estimated to be approximately $150,000 and approximately $80,000 worth saved. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Additional Information: The Kern County Fire Department would like to caution homeowners to exercise extra caution this holiday weekend while barbecuing and celebrating. Monitor your grille to keep children and pets away from flame and heat sources. Use only Safe and Sane fireworks and use them wisely to avoid fire, injury, or loss. Illegal fireworks can lead to expensive citations or even worse if they burn a neighbor's property or house. Enjoy our country's independence, but please be safe.
