Just after 8:30 this morning, the Kern County Fire  Department received a call for a fire in an apartment unit in the 3400 block of 15th Street West.  A reinforced structure response was started by dispatchers. There were reports of a possible victim inside the residence. A quick primary and secondary search by the first arriving crew confirmed all residents were out of the building. The crew encountered a single apartment unit with smoke and flames. Fire crews deployed hose lines to extinguish the fire. Ceilings were pulled to look for fire extension. It was discovered that the fire had reached the common attic and was deep seated. Firefighting efforts were hampered by high winds and low water supply pressured. Subsequent alarms were called. Five alarms total were needed to extinguish the fire and called in units from Los Angeles County, Edwards Air Force Base and California City. Fourteen apartments were involved. Firefighters were able to save 7 of the 14 units. The other 7 are reported as a total loss. The fire was controlled in approximately 5 hours. 30 people were displaced.  There were no injuries reported. A dog was the only reported fatality. The Red Cross is on scene to help people .
