Structure Fire - 5900 Block of Auburn Oaks Drive, Bakersfield

Just after 8:30 AM this morning, Kern County Fire Engine 42 was driving northbound on Fairfax Road when the crew spotted a column of black smoke in their response area. The crew proceeded to the source of smoke and located a residence on fire in the 5900 block of Auburn Oaks Drive. Upon arrival, the crew was met by two patients - an adult male suffering from 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his left hand, and an adult female with smoke inhalation burns. The Company Officer assigned his firefighter to patient care and advanced a hose-line to the rear of the structure where he made an indirect attack on the fire. As additional units arrived, they were assigned to patient care and fire attack. Firefighters were able to limit the spread of the fire to the living room, however the home suffered smoke damage throughout. The fire was extinguished in approximately 20 minutes. Fire Investigators were called to the scene and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Preliminary reports from the homeowner indicate the fire cause may have been human accidental. It is unknown if there was a working smoke alarm in the residence.
