Tehachapi, CA

At 3:00 PM on Tuesday afternoon, the Kern County Fire Department received reports of a column of smoke from the mountains south of Tehachapi.  A full wildland fire response was dispatched to the area of Tehachapi Mountain Park.  Access to fire was made difficult due to steep slopes and rugged terrain.  A combination of fire engines, hand crews, water tenders, helicopters, and air tankers were used to fight the fire.  Firefighters were able to quickly stop the spread of the fire before it became a threat to any structures.  The fire has burned an estimated 4 acres in heavy timber and brush.  The presence of dead trees in the burned area adds to the many hazards that firefighters face while attacking the fire and mopping up.  Firefighters will remain on scene overnight to extinguish hot spots and further secure the perimeter.  Fire cause is under investigation.
