Shortly after 3:30 PM Monday, The Kern County Fire Department received a report of a residential fire in the 500 Block of North Street, involving at least three structures. First arriving crews encountered a 1500 square foot single family residence approximately 75% involved, an adjacent apartment approximately 20% involved, a detached garage with extensive smoke and flames and a threatened outbuilding. Neighbors informed the firefighters that the main house was abandoned, but that the apartment was occupied by an adult male. Firefighters performed a primary search to locate the resident, but he had evacuated the building and was subsequently located safe. An aggressive attack was made to extinguish the blaze and the flames were knocked down in approximately fifteen minutes with full control in twenty-five minutes. The Breathing Support unit dispatched to the scene replaced air bottles consumed by the firefighters as well as provided much appreciated rehydrating drinks and cooling fans to counter the high summer temperatures. Total property loss to the structures and contents was estimated to be approximately $150,000 with approximately $40,000 saved. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Additional Information: The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind residents to install, maintain, and check their smoke detectors monthly. Change its battery twice a year, whenever we change our clocks to and from Daylight Saving Time. Smoke detectors save lives.
