KERN COUNTY, Calif. | The Independence Day holiday was once again one of the busiest days of the year for the Kern County Fire Department. As anticipated, emergency calls increased significantly throughout the holiday. To ensure firefighters could respond quickly to emergencies across Kern County, the department implemented a pre-planned staffing increase of 179 personnel, adding firefighters, dispatchers, and support staff in strategic locations before the holiday began. The additional staffing allowed crews to respond more effectively to the heightened demand while maintaining coverage throughout the county.
The department also continued encouraging the public to report illegal fireworks through the online reporting system whenever an immediate emergency did not exist. The continued use of online reporting helped reduce non-emergency phone traffic into the Emergency Communications Center, allowing dispatchers to prioritize life-threatening incidents and quickly assign firefighters to active emergencies.
Reducing non-emergency call volume has a direct impact on emergency response. Faster dispatch times mean firefighters can arrive at vegetation fires and structure fires sooner, increasing the likelihood of containing incidents while they are still small. Smaller fires require fewer resources, are extinguished more quickly, and allow firefighters to move on to the next emergency sooner.
Below are key statistics from this year’s Independence Day:
- 357 emergency incidents were dispatched on July 4th (45% increase from 2025).
- Firefighters responded to 203 fires on July 4th (44% increase from 2025).
- The Kern County Emergency Communications Center handled 1,368 “911” calls on July 4th (38% increase from 2025).
- The Illegal Fireworks Reporter online portal received 3,500 reports on July 4th (4,400 in 2025).
