2025 Independence Day Review

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. | The Independence Day Holiday brought with it high temperatures and high call volume. The spike of emergency activity is expected as July 4th is traditionally the busiest day of the year in the fire service. To meet these demands and ensure the safety of our communities as they enjoyed the holiday, KCFD firefighter and dispatcher staffing was increased.

This year there was an increase in the number of reports made for illegal fireworks online. While online reports increased, the number of calls to the Emergency Communication Center decreased. As a result, dispatchers were able to direct crews to emergencies faster because they were taking fewer non-emergency illegal fireworks calls. This single change had a positive effect on the operational effectiveness of fire personnel. Firefighters were able to arrive at fires more promptly and fight smaller fires. Smaller fires are extinguished faster with less personnel who are then ready to respond to the next emergency sooner.

Below are key statistics from this year’s Independence Day:

  • 247 emergency incidents were dispatched on July 4th (313 in 2024).
  • Firefighters responded to 141 fires on July 4th (142 in 2024).
  • The Kern County Emergency Communications Center handled 988 “911” calls on July 4th (1,317 in 2024).
  • The Illegal Fireworks Reporter online portal received 4,400 reports on July 4th (4,126 in 2024).

The Kern County Fire Department extends its sincere gratitude to the firefighters who worked tirelessly through long hours and heat to protect lives and property; to the emergency dispatchers who managed a surge in calls with precision and calm under pressure; to our partner agencies whose collaboration and coordination were essential to the overall success of the response effort; and to the community members who took proactive steps to stay safe, report illegal activity, and support emergency personnel. The strength of this collective effort highlights the resilience and unity of Kern County in the face of challenging circumstances.
