KERN COUNTY, Calif. | The Kern County Fire Department is proud to announce its participation in the 2024 Great ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake drill designed to promote safety and preparedness in the event of a major earthquake. On October 17, 2024, at 10:17 AM, our department will join millions across California in the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill to practice proper safety measures during an earthquake.
Earthquake Safety Tips: Stay Safe Before, During, and After an Earthquake
The Kern County Fire Department encourages everyone to participate in the 2024 Great ShakeOut and follow these important earthquake safety tips.
During an Earthquake:
- Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Drop to your hands and knees, cover your head and neck with your arms, and if possible, take shelter under a sturdy table or desk. Hold on until the shaking stops.
- Stay Indoors: If you are inside, remain inside until the shaking ends. Stay away from windows, glass, and heavy furniture.
- Stay Put: If you are in bed, stay there and protect your head with a pillow. If you are outside, move to a clear area away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires.
After an Earthquake:
- Be Cautious of Aftershocks: Smaller quakes may follow the initial tremor. Be prepared to drop, cover, and hold on again.
- Check for Injuries and Damage: Check yourself and others for injuries. Be mindful of structural damage, gas leaks, or electrical hazards, and evacuate if necessary.
- Stay Informed: Use a battery-powered radio or your mobile device to receive updates and emergency alerts from local authorities.

We also encourage all residents to download the MyShake app, a vital tool that provides real-time earthquake alerts and safety tips. By familiarizing yourself with the app, you can receive early warnings about seismic activity, allowing you more time to take protective actions.
