KCFD Begins New Medical Unit Academy

KERN COUNTY, Calif., The Kern County Fire Department is excited to announce that on Monday, April 1, 2024, we are once again adding to our department’s history. A new expansion of service is being made as never before, funded by Measure K. Today, a Medical Unit Academy began with six civilian EMTs and six civilian Paramedics.

We are thrilled to welcome these 12 individuals into our department. They will complete a three-week academy and then begin responding to medical emergencies throughout unincorporated areas of Kern County as “Medical Units.”

The primary purpose of each Medical Unit is to provide expedient medical care prior to transport units arriving on scene or to provide support to units on scene with additional medical personnel, equipment, and supplies. Medical Units will reduce response times, provide Advanced Life Support care, and improve availability of Fire Units.
