Lightning Safety

Thunderstorms can happen any time of the year.  Lightning strikes can cause great harm to anyone.  Lightning can strike far away from where rain is falling.  The following tips can help protect you and your family from lightning strikes.

 

Safety Tips

 

Outdoor Safety

 

If you can hear thunder, you can get struck by lightning.

 

When you hear thunder, you will need to seek safe shelter.  A substantial building or a metal roofed vehicle offers the best protection against lightning strikes.  Avoid elevated ground or open fields.

 

Stay away from tall objects or objects made of metal such as trees, posts, or fences. 

 

Keep away from bodies of water such as lakes or pools.

 

Indoor Safety

 

Avoid contact with corded phones, computers, and other electrical appliances which have a direct electrical connection.

 

Avoid contact with all plumbing such as sinks and bathtubs.

 

Stay away from all windows and doors.

 

Do not lay down on concrete floors or lean against concrete walls.

 

If someone is struck by lightning:

 

Immediately call 9-1-1

 

It is safe to provide first aid to the victim of a lightning strike. If necessary, CPR can be provided to the victim without danger to the rescuer.
