At 12:41 this morning the Kern County Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 1200 block of Sterling Road. Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke and flames coming from a storage area to the rear of a vacant market and an adjacent house. As fire crews arrived on scene, there were reports of children trapped inside. KCSO deputies assisted with evacuating members of a family that were squatting in the storage area. Three family members were burn victims and transported to the hospital. The house, vacant market and storage area were searched for additional victims as the fire was being extinguished. Unfortunately, a deceased child was discovered in the storage area. Fire Investigators and Coroner responded to the scene to investigate and document the scene. There were no injuries to firefighters as a result of the fire. The fire cause is under investigation.

Additional Information: The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind residence to make sure you have a working smoke detector in your home. It is a good reminder to check all smoke detectors and replace the battery if needed.
